Sundays Are For Thinking

Who still sets away time for introspection?

“Five percent of the people think; ten percent of the people think they think; and the other eighty-five percent would rather die than think.” ― Thomas A. Edison

You’re not part of the 85%. After all, you’re trying to empty your cup. But you might be part of the 10%. I know I am a lot of the time.

We think about why we do our jobs or how we can become better people or what we really want out of a relationship - but we never set aside time to just think about these things.

We do it on the subway or when we lie in bed at night, waiting to fall asleep. We do it after a colleague died or we had an accident, because suddenly, we’re reminded of how important they are.

But what if we thought about them systematically? What if every week - not just once in a while - we made time to think? That’s what the 5% are doing and it’s extremely rare these days.

For most of us, Sunday is a slow day anyway. Why not come to a full stop? Why not lie on your bed, sit in your favorite chair, or stare out the window…and think?

Of course, it’s hard. With infinite amounts of information and entertainment surrounding us, who can still resist? Who can carve out time for emptiness?

I have a hunch that, whoever it is, they will rule the world. At the very least, they will rule over themselves - and that’s more than the 85% can say.
