In an early How I Met Your Mother episode, Ted tells the story of how his grandma always said: “Nothing good happens after 2 AM.”
Once upon a time, he went over to a friend’s place late at night, and almost cheated on his girlfriend. Because, like most of us, by 2 AM, Ted has run out of good decisions.
The moral is that when it’s late, you’re out of energy, and almost certainly out of rational thinking, just go home. Go to sleep. Tomorrow will be another day.
That’s a good lesson, but there are exceptions.
Yesterday, I stayed up until 2:30 AM. That made no sense at all. But that’s what humans do.
You see, I spent over four hours watching cutscenes from one of my favorite video games. I also read what felt like half of the fan wiki to go with it. It’s just too good of a story to not get lost in it.
For the first time, I realized what a massive tale Hideo Kojima has been telling with the Metal Gear series. 30 years, 20+ games, and over $1 billion grossed with over 55 million copies sold. Imagine the scale! The characters. The events. The ups and downs.
That’s what I want and what has always most fascinated me about writing: how can an entire universe spring from a single person’s head? So I got inspired, and it carried me away. Way past 2 AM.
That’s what humans do.
We have our systems, our routines, our maintenance modes and everyday humdrum lives. These things help us. They allow us to function on a day-to-day basis. But, at the end of the day, we’re here for something larger.
We’re meant to be inspired, motivated by a mission, driven to be creative and thoughtful and looking out for the greater good. And if that means we have to break the rules from time to time, then that’s not just rational, it’s what we’re here to do.
So no, we may not always make good decisions after 2 AM. But sometimes, it’s our best decisions that get us to stay up so late in the first place.
About No Sense Friday: Most people live for Friday. Relaxing on the weekend is fine, but we can’t just waste it away every time. That’s why Friday is the most important day to call out things that make no sense. Because in a way, the concept of ‘Friday’ itself makes no sense.
A good life is lived every day, not just once a week.
